Electroplated Diamond Core Drill Bit / Diamond Coated: This refers to the manufacturing process. Diamond grit (industrial-grade) is electroplated (bonded via a nickel or other metal matrix) onto a steel core. This creates a single, durable layer of diamonds on the cutting edge.
Pro: Excellent for intermittent use, generally more affordable than sintered (vacuum brazed) bits, and works well with water cooling.
Con: The diamond layer wears away over time and cannot be re-sharpened. When it's dull, the bit is done.
Core Drill / Hole Saw: Unlike a solid drill bit, this is hollow. It only cuts the perimeter of the hole, leaving a solid "core" or "slug" of material in the center. This makes it much faster and requires less power than drilling out the entire volume of the hole.
For Glass, Marble, Granite, Tiles: This is its primary application. It's designed for materials that are:
Hard: Can scratch glass.
Brittle: Prone to chipping, cracking, or shattering.
Abrasive: Will wear down normal steel bits instantly.
Drilling holes in glass (for plumbing, hardware, or decorative purposes).
Installing fixtures in ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone tiles (e.g., for shower arms, pipes, towel bars).
Creating holes in granite or marble countertops for sinks, faucets, and soap dispensers.
Drilling in slate, sandstone, and other engineered stones.
